Composer and digital artist Raphaël Néron completed a master's degree in composition at the Université de Montréal. His works take hybrid forms, blending electroacoustic music, video, literature and installation. His aim is to develop research-creation projects that question the modalities of meaning-making in the digital age. The notion of space - sound and visual, real or suggested, intimate or shared - is at the heart of his creative language. A sound creation teacher at the Cégep de Drummondville, he has worked with the Groupe de Recherche en Immersion Spatiale, directed the Centre d'Arts Médiatiques DAÏMÔN, been technical director of the Studio-Théâtre de la Place Des Arts and coordinated an FCI research project on audiovisual immersion at the Université de Montréal. His work has been screened and won awards at national and international festivals: MA/IN (IT), NYCEF (US), Mutek (CA), Commute (EE), NAISA (CA), UNDÆ! (ES), Code d'Accès (CA), Voxnovus (US), Elektra Music (FR), etc. He has also received grants and commissions from the Canada, Quebec and Montreal Arts Councils.
THE PROJECT
L'Écorce sonore : Interprétation musicale de la Nature (working title) " The artistic residency "Sound Bark" (working title) aims to merge the fields of sound art, music and visual art, using tree bark patterns to create unique sound compositions. Observing the natural patterns and textures of bark, with their delicate lines and repetitive patterns, I noticed that these bear an uncanny resemblance to MIDI scores, which are graphic representations of the musical notes played by an instrument. This observation inspired me to transform these natural patterns into music, offering a new perspective on how we can interpret and appreciate the elements of nature. The aim of this residency is to convert these patterns into MIDI files to generate original sounds and creations. The "L'Écorce" artistic residency proposes an innovative approach to interpreting natural elements through music. By transforming birch bark patterns into sound compositions, this project invites a deep exploration of the links between nature, visual art and music. This residency will not only be an opportunity to create new artworks, but also to inspire reflection on how we perceive and interpret the natural world around us."
